ReNu contact lens solution has been pulled from the shelves after reports of a link between ReNu and serious eye infections. The Food and Drug Administration (FDA) is investigating reported cases of a fungal eye infection that has been associated with the use of ReNu contact lens solution. This rare fungal infection can cause blindness if left untreated.
ReNu contact lens solution has been pulled from the shelves of major U.S. retailers such as Wal-Mart, Walgreens, Kmart and Sears at the request of its manufacturer, Bausch & Lomb.
The request follows a lawsuit which charges the company with failing to disclose reports linking ReNu contact lens solution to serious eye infections in Asia.
Bausch & Lomb has suspended shipment of ReNu and has asked that retailers temporarily remove ReNu from their shelves. The manufacturer will also be running newspaper ads to warn consumers against using the contact lens solution.
Bausch & Lomb suspended sales in Hong Kong and Singapore two months ago following reports of serious eye infections due to ReNu use.
Currently, U.S. health authorities are looking into 109 cases of this fungal infection, Fusarium keratitis, that can cause permanent vision loss in left untreated. Of these cases, 26 were using ReNu products or generic versions made by Bausch & Lomb. However, federal health officials have been unable to make a direct link between ReNu and serious eye infections.
After inspecting its plants, Bausch & Lomb has not found any links to infection but it recommends that consumers use an alternat e contact lens solution until the investigation is complete.
