Dog Bite Injuries
No one can imagine their pet becoming mean enough to attack someone. Yet dogs bite 4.5 million Americans each year, injuring 800,000 of them seriously enough to require medical treatment.
Children and senior citizens face the greatest danger, according to the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association ( June 1, 2001 ). Kids may unknowingly provoke dogs by running close by, grabbing them, making high-pitched noises, or staring. Older people are at risk because of impaired sight and hearing. This may make them less able to perceive a dog's agitation. Also, older, thinning skin is more vulnerable to serious injury.
Postal carriers also face a great risk of dog attack. In fact, it is one of their greatest job hazards. In 1998, over 2,500 postal workers suffered dog bites.
