Mirapex Linked to Obsessive Gambling

In May of 2005, Pfizer Inc. and Boehringer Ingelheim Pharmaceuticals Inc. were accused of distributing Mirapex as a drug that turned some people into gambling addicts in a lawsuit filed in Ontario Superior Court.

A report published on July 12, 2005 in the issue of Archives of Neurology details a study conducted by researchers at the Mayo Clinic on the effects of Mirapex. According to the report, researchers discovered that dozens of patients using Mirapex or a similar drug had developed a serious gambling addiction.

This problem was reaffirmed in August of 2005, when Mayo Clinic researchers found 22 percent of people (or 1 out of 5) with Parkinson's disease treated with drugs that include Mirapex, Requip, or Permax reported episodes of uncontrollable sleepiness, such as falling asleep while driving.

What is Mirapex?

Mirapex eases the symptoms of Parkinson's disease and fibromyalgia . Mirapex is believed to work by boosting the action of whatever dopamine is available, which is low in persons with Parkinson's disease. It is a dopamine agonist that directly stimulate nerves in the brain that are not naturally being stimulated by dopamine.
